Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is one of the chemicals best studied and known by scientists. Due to its beneficial properties, it has been used in medicine for many years – it supports the circulatory system, accelerates wound healing and even protects us against cancerous changes.

Today, vitamin C is appreciated more and more – in addition to medicine, it has also been included in cosmetics, becoming a star, valued mainly for its anti-aging effects (anti-aging). Vitamin C is a powerful natural antioxidant that helps fight free radicals, slowing down the aging process of the skin and leaving it firm and glowing.

How does Vitamin C affect skin pigmentation?

Skin color comes from a pigment called melanin. This pigment is made by melanocytes, a type of cell deep within the skin. Skin lightening products work by slowing down melanin production. These products can be chemicals, peels or vitamins for skin whitening. In the case of Vitamin C, it has a number of ways of making the skin lighter:

1)  inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase. By doing this, less melanin pigments are produced.

2) Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant. It fights free radicals that cause skin aging and darkening. It also increases the levels of glutathione and Vitamin E in your body. These two are strong antioxidants as well.

3) topical Vitamin C repairs damaged skin when applied after sun exposure.

4) Vitamin C acts as a mild exfoliant. By getting rid of dead skin cells, which contain melanin, the skin becomes smoother and lighter.

Can I just take oral Vitamin C?

There is a very long answer to this question but I am going to make it very simple 🙂 NO! To get all of its good effects on the skin, you need topical Vitamin C. Topical Vitamin C is 20 times more effective than the oral form in terms of skincare. A diet rich in Vitamin C combined with topical application is the best way to get all of these benefits.

I reckon if there is ONE product you need to be using right now – it is the Vitamin C range from AA Cosmetics. This is something VERY IMPORTANT to consider when trying anything skincare related. It isn’t going to work overnight. Just think  about how long you have had those marks for or how long you have suffered with pigmentation? Years right? So it is going to take a while maybe even 3 months before you see a result….so you HAVE to be consistent use it every day and every night and slowly slowly you will see a result. Be patient. All good things take time 🙂

Click here to see what we have from AA Cosmetics which is 100% allergy tested, not tested on animals and is hypoallergenic. Oh and a heads up there are Vitamin C serums with more than 15% vitamin C – be careful as the maximum dose is 15%. Our serum has only 8% in it and can be used in combination with the Day and the Night cream.
